Face Swap Video Tutorial: From Clip to Finished Video
Everything a first-time user needs: which clips work, which photos fail, what each setting costs, and how to fix a soft result.
How do you make a face swap video on your phone?
To make a face swap video on iPhone or Android with ActLike AI, add a clip of one person up to 20 seconds long, add a photo you have permission to use or describe an original character, then choose Credit Saver 480p or Best Quality 720p and tap Generate. The video is ready in minutes, and a 10-second clip costs about 10 credits at 480p.
What you need before starting
This face swap video tutorial assumes nothing. You do not need editing software or experience. You need an iPhone on iOS 17 or later or an Android phone, the ActLike AI app, and two things to feed it.
- A clip of one person, up to 20 seconds long. Their movement and expressions are what your character will follow.
- A character: either a photo you own or have permission to use, or a short written description of an original character.
Choosing a clip that works
Every face swap video tutorial should start here, because the clip decides how the head moves, how the light falls and how many credits the video costs.
One person, clearly framed
ActLike AI is designed for clips of a single person. A subject filling roughly a third of the frame gives the model the clearest signal to follow.
Nothing crossing the face
Hands, microphones and hair blowing across the mouth all interrupt tracking. Choose a take where the face stays visible throughout.
Steady beats shaky
Gentle camera movement looks natural. Heavy handheld shake, however, blurs individual frames, and blurred frames soften the result.
Shorter is cheaper
Credits are charged per second, so a 6-second clip costs half as much as a 12-second one. Five to ten seconds is the practical sweet spot.
Preparing the photo
If you use a photo, it carries the identity, so its quality sets the ceiling for the whole video. Four things matter, and none needs a better camera.
- 1Light the face evenlyFace a window in daylight. Even light shows every feature; a hard side shadow hides half of them.
- 2Look at the cameraA front-facing photo adapts to more head positions than a three-quarter profile.
- 3Keep a neutral expressionA neutral face adapts to whatever the person in the clip is doing. A wide grin fights it.
- 4Remove obstructionsSunglasses, hats and hair across the eyes all reduce accuracy.
The app runs a photo check before generating, and warns you if a photo is too dark, blurry or turned away, so a weak photo never costs you credits.
The face swap video tutorial in three steps
- 1Add your clipChoose the video of one person from your library. It can be up to 20 seconds long.
- 2Add your characterAdd a photo, or describe a character in words, for example "a weathered sea captain with a grey beard". Describing an original character avoids any question of whose face it is.
- 3Pick a quality and tap GenerateCredit Saver 480p for ideas, Best Quality 720p HD for the final cut. Turn on Scene Match for anything you will share. The video is ready in minutes.
What each setting costs
| Setting | Cost | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Credit Saver (480p) | 1 credit per second | Drafts, trends and testing ideas |
| Best Quality (720p HD) | 2 credits per second | Anything you plan to share |
| Scene Match | +1 credit per video | Almost always; essential in strong directional light |
A 10-second video therefore costs 10 credits at 480p, 11 with Scene Match, 20 at 720p, or 21 at 720p with Scene Match. Full pack prices are on the pricing page.
Fixing the common problems
The result looks soft
The photo is usually too dark or too small. Retake it facing a window in daylight.
The character slips during movement
The clip probably has motion blur or something crossing the face. Choose a steadier, unobstructed take.
The lighting looks wrong
Scene Match was probably off. Turn it on and generate again; it costs one credit.
A video failed
The app returns the credits automatically, so trying again with a different clip costs nothing extra.
Questions about this guide
About ten minutes for your first ActLike AI video, including choosing a clip and taking a photo. Later videos take a few minutes, mostly waiting for generation.
